Please note that we provide a lot of on-going coaching to individuals that may have experienced trauma in a movement setting. We understand that there are a lot of people navigating challenging past experiences when it comes to movement, especially in a group.

Mental Health In A Movement Setting

We understand that traditional movement settings “gyms, Pilates studios, yoga studios” have not always had a reputation of being size-inclusive movement spaces. Coming into a movement setting will hold many beliefs for some. Beliefs that are rooted in previous experiences of shame and judgement, but also a reduced confidence in your body and in yourself to move in a certain way.

Trust, Safety, Collaboration, Empowerment + Choice.

At any.BODY Studio we work within a trauma informed care framework, listen to our clients and understand that their body and their journey with their health at times may have been traumatic and overwhelming.

  • Safe relationships are consistent, predictable, and none-shaming.

  • Safe surroundings are warm and welcoming.

  • Safe language is respectful.

  • Trust is the foundation for establishing a healthy relationship and ensuring on-going care

  • As exercise professionals we help identify options and alternatives for movement, but we collaborate with you to ensure you feel safe and comfortable with the choice of movement.

  • Promoting and reinforcing autonomy, can help you feel in control rather than being in a place of powerlessness.

  • A collaborative relationship is one in which the health professionals professional knowledge is combined with the clients expertise in their life.

It’s understandable if you’ve had an experience with body image issues, disordered eating or an eating disorder that approaching exercise or physical activity may be a little daunting. Exercise may have been used as a tool to punish your body or something motivated by weight loss, body shape change, or a way to compensate.

Being cautious in your approach is a sign you are healing or have healed and do not want exercise to be what it was in the past.

Establishing a healthy relationship with exercise and movement takes time and will look different for every individual. This relationship can also be challenged by the diet culture we live in, where messaging around body shape, size and movement has been hijacked, where it’s now hard to decipher what is in fact ‘healthy’.

Warning signs exercise might not be healthy or positive.

  • Feeling pressure to move or exercise because others are, or to compensate for foods eaten.

  • Moving to control our body size or weight or with the main goal or focus on weight loss or body shape change

  • Training when unwell or injured – adopting the ‘pushing through’ mentality just means we’re ignoring the signals our body is sending us (e.g. I’m tired, I’m sore, I need rest.)

  • Not fuelling appropriately.

  • Not enjoying exercise or it feels like a chore.

At any.BODY Pilates & Exercise Physiology you can work with our team of highly trained practitioners on improving your relationship with movement. Dependent on psychological barriers it might be useful to work in a 1:1 setting however we can discuss the best options for your individual needs at your assessment.

FAQs

What is Health At Every Size (HAES)?

  1. Weight Inclusivity: Accept and respect the inherent diversity of body shapes and sizes and reject the idealizing or pathologizing of specific weights.

  2. Health Enhancement: Support health policies that improve and equalize access to information and services, and personal practices that improve human well-being, including attention to individual physical, economic, social, spiritual, emotional, and other needs.

  3. Respectful Care: Acknowledge our biases, and work to end weight discrimination, weight stigma, and weight bias. Provide information and services from an understanding that socio-economic status, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and other identities impact weight stigma, and support environments that address these inequities.

  4. Eating for Well-being: Promote flexible, individualized eating based on hunger, satiety, nutritional needs, and pleasure, rather than any externally regulated eating plan focused on weight control.

  5. Life-Enhancing Movement: Support physical activities that allow people of all sizes, abilities, and interests to engage in enjoyable movement, to the degree that they choose.

Do you have mirrors in the studio?

We do have mirrors in both our Group Reformer and Clinical Pilates Studio. We do have curtains in our Clinical Pilates Studio that we use for those that are triggered by mirrors. Unfortunately we are yet to install curtains in our group reformer studio.

When do the classes run?

Our Bigger Bodies group reformer classes will run on a Tuesday at 5:30pm and a Thursday at 5:30pm. It is our goal to increase the number of classes on our timetable, once the classes start to fill up. We have 4-5 Clinical Pilates Classes on our timetable everyday, for those that want a tailored 1:3 approach to their movement journey.

Do I need to attend an Initial Assessment prior to commencing classes?

We want to ensure that you have the best experience at your first class, so please book in for an Initial Assessment prior to commencing classes. We want to get to know you, discuss any concerns you may have and show you our fantastic studio. We understand that this is a big step for many, so its our number one priority to make you feel comfortable, and completely in control of your movement plan.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

If you have a chronic health condition, a referral from your GP means there will be Medicare rebates available for 1:1 sessions prior to joining our group classes. This is at times ideal to build a strong foundation prior to moving into our bigger bodies classes.

Can I Claim on my private health insurance?

As your classes will be run by HAES aligned Accredited Exercise Physiologists, your Assessments and classes can be claimed on private health insurance if you have cover for Exercise Physiology.
